the first day at the Very Large Insurance Company went quite well. it almost didnt start well, as my junky little car refused to start. but I just comandeered mama's car, sadly leaving her stuck at home for the day. after jumpstarting it tonight, hopefully it will behave tomorrow.
one of the biggest changes is simply having to get up early. ever since the new baby, it was very rare for me to be at my old job before 9. usually it was 9:15. but now it's 8am for me. so we're up early, and mama is on her own for about 1.5 more hours in the morning.
but once I actually got there, it went quite well. my 2 biggest unknowns were how the people would be, and if I was up to par as far as programming goes. as for the first, the folks I'll be working with seem pretty nice. most seem pretty laid-back and helpful. it was interesting to me that a lot of the folks are my parents' age. so it'll be cool to work with folks who arent just like me. also, my immediate boss seems like a good guy. he told me he can be a hard-driver, but at the same time he seems quite reasonable. as for programming stuff, I think it'll be OK. all the stuff I've seen so far makes sense to me, and even the new stuff looks pretty cool and something that I can get into pretty quickly.
and to top it off, I got a pretty good computer too. I didnt have one at first, but when we got back from lunch, there was a pretty good machine with twice as much RAM as I was told I'd be getting, plus a nice flat panel monitor. on the whole floor, I think I saw just one other flat-panel, so I think I got the new generation of stuff. cool.
one big difference I noticed was the quiet. I'm used to a loft space with everyone chatting and hearing eachothers phone calls and such, and I'm often too attentive for my own good in that atmosphere. but today I noticed the hum of the lights, the whir of the a/c, and the click of my neighbor's mouse. I have a feeling that I might be more than a little more productive in this atmosphere.
when I got home, mama and the kids were having a bad day. after more than a week of having daddy in charge, I think Caleb was out of sorts. I do miss keeping in touch with mama (and others)via IM during the day. hopefully a few emails will fill in the gap a little, now that I'm set up. hopefully tomorrow will be better for the family, so please pray for mama especially.
we'll see how the rest of the week goes. I'm sure I'll be doing various training and such, but hopefully I can get in and get some work done sooner than later. thanks again to all for your concern and prayers. God has been and continues to be very good to us.
