today’s a big day for Caleb: first day of preschool! although the last thing he told me before bed was “I dont want to go to preschool”, this morning he woke up with a big smile, declaring that he was ready to go, and excited about taking his baseball lunchbox. he apparently did very well with being dropped off. he’s usually apprehensive (to say the least) about starting new things. for example, he hit the floor, crying loudly, when he went to his new Sunday school room and teachers this month (but he got over it quickly and now he’s fine). so we’ll see how well he does with all the newness, and with being away from home for 5 hours.
for her part, mama shed a few tears as she drove away. it’s exciting to have him start up schooling, but also a pretty big transition too. after this year we’ll see if he’s ready for “real” school (probably at CCS), or we may do another year of preschool, since he’d be very young for his class.
the coolest thing for me will be hearing what he has to say about everything. so far we’ve obviously been there for most of the things he’s experienced, but now we’ll have to hear it from him. when in the mood, and once you get him started, he’s pretty good at talking about stuff, so we’ll see what he has to say.
update: I just heard from Caleb and it sounds like he had a really good time. he sounded very happy and proud of himself. he told me that he learned about the letter A and apparently did fingerprint drawings of ants. he said more than once something like “I had a really good time.” apparently he “had to take a break on the bench” when the other kids sang too loudly for his tastes (he’s never been into loudness). he’s pretty bad at participating in group activities, so we’ll see how that aspect progresses as he goes along. when asked if he made any new friends, he said he’ll be ready to say “hi, I’m Caleb, what’s your name?” next time. super cute. anyway, it sure sounds like he had a blast. Alice apparently had a nice time playing on her own at home, by the way.
we’re so proud of our big boy. I guess the “growing up fast” really starts to pick up the pace now.

Don’t you wish you could be a little fly-on-the-wall to watch him!!! I can ALMOST remember my feelings of sending off the first child to pre-school. It certainly is a special time for Caleb.
