farewell to teal
April 29, 2008 by bobw
at long last, the teal mobile is no longer. I thought about fixing it up, but the bus has been treating me well, so I sold the carcass for cheap to someone who might be able to give it yet another life. I’ll miss the inherent freedom of an extra car, but I definitely wont miss features such as: driver-side window didnt go down, the stupid automatic (and messed up) seatbelts, the broken seats (necessitating milk crates), the lack of mirrors (1/2 was my own doing) and of course the beauty marks all over it. yet somehow I was fond of the old dead bumblebee in the back window, and of course the Lilt sticker in the window. so the kids and I waved goodbye, and I’ll continue to ride the bus, for now at least. once again, many thanks to Andy and Katie and families for passing it on.

thanks so much for your generosity! you sooo did not have to do that. We’ve already gotten money from the teal mobile for one of those lovely beauty marks :)
We’ll return the favor some specific way :)
[katie is referring to the fact that I shared the proceeds with the previous owners, since they gave it to me for free. seemed only fair]
My parents bought me that car (actually, I still owe them for it-last and only car I didn’t pay cash for) for the Astec internship back in 1998. I tore the side mirrors off twice, drove it off the road at Big Canoe after Crosby Smith’s wedding, ran over the hood with our 3/4 ton Chevy, drove it up and down I-95 from Covenant to Maine 4 times, and it still kept going at 190k miles. Gotta give Saturn kudos for that!
It’s a miracle you fit in the thing Bob. Thanks for letting us partake in its demise. You mention there may be a second life for it?
yeah the drivetrain was pretty much invincible, but all the plastic and junk around it was disintegrating. I tore off one mirror myself, but that was about it for me. I’m still aghast I didnt win our church’s “ugly car contest”
and I didnt really fit in it too well, but only going 5 miles each way made it no big deal. a friend-of-a-friend took it away, vowing to fix it up, so who knows, maybe it’ll have yet another life (5th?)
