un-American

with the car out of commission, I’ve been riding the bus, as so far so good. it does feel decidedly un-American however. I NEED more control than the bus affords. not to mention getting impatient when it’s not on time. so a little of my controlling nature is dying each trip, and that’s a good thing I think. it’s nice to be able to read a book on the commute too, and really it couldnt be more convenient (bus stop 1/2 block from my house, the other end just 2 blocks from work). so we’re thinking I’ll do the bus thing so we can save some funds for a better family car (van) if/when we outgrow the current family car. and while it’s not Greyhound, it’s still fun to say that I’m “riding the puppy” as Dave B. used to say…

You are an inspiration Mr. Wiegers. I wish I had a bus stop near my house (especially with gas prices these days)
I’m a fan of public trans. We’ve been a one-car fam for over a year, and sometimes it’s awkward. But the public trans helps–helps my mindset flexible.
I’ve done the bus commute for several months many times over the past ten years. It is, in many ways, a burden lifter as much as it is a autonomy fiend.
Enjoy the time.
Damon was going to ride the bus today but he missed it. We function pretty well as a one car family, with me dropping D off at work in the morning or he rides the bus or he takes the car while I stay at home all day and I walk or use the bus if I need it. (And yes, I realize we have two cars, but we function as if we have one since the Blazer isn’t too reliable right now.)
Ahh. The joys! Sounds pretty convenient, actually. A bit of unsolicited advice from one half of a one-car couple: Be fiendish about maintaining your only car so it’s always ready for you. Scheduled service is always cheaper than emergency service.
Enjoy the public trans. Your taxes at work! See you soon.
Love ya! DadW
I used the bus in the past when we lived in Lititz - loved the cross cultural experience as well as the additional reading time. Enjoy!
